Create Virtual Hard Disks [Windows 7]

Have you ever wished you had an extra Disk Drive to set aside your documents, files, etc.? This is one of the new features of Windows 7, that helps you create Virtual Disk Drives, similar to your Hard Disk drives.

If you are not a Windows 7 user, you can always use TrueCrypt, a freeware tool, to create encrypted virtual disk drives. The process is similar.

To start with, right-click ‘Computer’ (My Computer) and click ‘Manage’. Choose ‘Disk Management’ under ‘Storage’ in the left pane. Or type in diskmgmt.msc in the run command to directly open up ‘Disk Management’ window.

Create Shortcut to ‘All Users’ view in Task Manager [Windows 7]

When you open the Task Manager in Windows 7, you’ll only be presented with processes that run under your user account, even if you are an administrator. The process list includes few System processes. And you’ll have to click the ‘Show processes from all users’ button every time to view all running processes and that’s not what we need. Here’s a way to make it show ‘All Users’ list by default when you open this shortcut that you’ll create yourself by the end of this article..

Make System Restore use Less Drive Space [Windows 7]

System Restore is a part of your Windows Operating System that was debuted in Windows Millenium and helps recovering your files and settings from previous copies. Tweaking System Restore to use Less Disk Space

Start by right-clicking your ‘Computer’ (My Computer, in older term) icon, choose Properties from the menu. This will take you to the ‘System’ window. Click ‘Advanced system settings’ on the left pane in the ‘System’ window.

Add ‘Open with Notepad’ to Context Menu

When I come across files with unknown extension, I prefer to open it with Notepad. The same when it comes to files like PHP, HTML, CSS and the likes. Adding a context menu option, to open with notepad, helps you quickly open up files without having to go through the long ‘Open with’ way, obviously saving your time. Though this is a common registry trick, for sure you should have read about this in many sites, if you haven’t heard, read below. You should also be knowing to deal with Registry Editor, if not, you can download the registry key directly at the end of this post. (more…)

Registry Editing disabled by Administrator

Registry Editor IconThere are few reasons why Registry Editor gets disabled, and when you attempt to open Registry Editor when it is disabled, you get a message box that reads “Registry Editing has been disabled by your Administrator”. Few Trojans are made specifically to disable registry editor and few others are made in order not to revoke it from Startup (CurrentVersion/Run). If you ever up with this problem, be sure to first check your PC for Viruses/Trojans. I’ve already blogged on basic security which you can find here. Then proceed with the following solutions. ShutdownIf you’ve been using the power button to force shutdown your PC, try this Command Line trick to Force Shutdown and to Force Restart your PC. This Command Line trick allows you to specify normal Shutdown/Restart or if you want to Force Shutdown/Restart and also allows you to specify the time to wait before Force Shutdown/Restart. Shutdown.exe is the process responsible for System Shutdown and Restart. Normal Shutdown is the term we’ve used here to mention the default Shutdown. Force Shutdown will stop all processes and forcefully shuts down your PC. Force Shutdown with time set as a parameter, will force shutdown your PC at the specified time. The same goes for Restart and Force Restart except for the base parameter (-r instead of -s) (more…)
